How many railway zones in India and their headquarters?
Indian Railway Zones Headquarters And Divisions: Indian Railways to operate its system divides it into zones, which are further sub-divided into divisions, each having a divisional headquarters for each of the divisions of the zones. A total of 18 zones on the Indian railway system, including the Metro Railway, Kolkata, and 70 divisions. Each division is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager DRM, who reports to the General Manager GM of the area. The DRM is assisted in the functioning of the Division by one or two Additional Divisional Railway Managers ADRMs. The Divisional Officers heading all the departments like Stores, Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Signal & Telecommunication, Accounts, Personnel, Operational, Commercial, Security, Medical, Security Branches all these reports to the Divisional Railway Manager.

- Kolkata metro is also a division of Indian Railways headquartered in Park Street, and most number of Zonal Headquarters of Indian Railways in India
- Northern Railway is the longest rail route zone of the Indian Railways, which is 6968 km long and consists of 1142 stations.
- Konkan Railway is the shortest rail route zone of the Indian Railways, which is only 741 kms and covers just 67 stations.
- Every division has a Control Room for train operations, where all the trains in the division are controlled and monitored.
- Every division has Accident Relief Trains ARTs, Accident Relief Medical Vans ARMVs and Breakdown Cranes for assisting in disaster management.
- The Diesel Locomotive Sheds and Electric Locomotive Sheds in the division maintain diesel and electric locomotives respectively. Their administrative control is with the Divisional Railway Manager, DRM.
- Every division has some coaching depots to maintain its passenger cars and sick lines to maintain freight cars which are found unfit at the freight examination points.
